Theresa Zhang, owner of Laguna Serviced Apartments
From rural China to Serviced Apartment owner.
Theresa Zhang, owner of Laguna Serviced Apartments
Theresa, born in a small country town in a farming area of China, where as a child, life was very hard for her. As soon as she finished high school she left home and travelled to a big city to look for job.
No one would give her a job, so penniless, with no food and out of desperation Theresa decided she would have to work for herself. She started by selling boiled eggs at railway station where she made 5 cents Chinese money per egg and from there, she began her business life.
Today, after 30 years in business which ranged from lunch boxes to noodle bar; restaurants to cotton farming; night club and pub; property development and hotel development and ownership and much more in between! Retirement – no way! People often tell Theresa that she is so lucky because of the lifestyle she has and her answer is: “it’s funny, the harder I work, the luckier I seem to get.”
In 2003, Theresa was walking home after she had taken her car for service when a property on the Toowoomba CBD fringe caught her eye. She couldn’t believe that such a property was available for sale. On the spur of the moment she decide to purchase it, the property was called “Laguna “. Originally this was the old Weis homestead and later on became “Laguna” and was owned by the Philharmonic Society.
Theresa changed its name to the Coffee House without realising that it was a well know place for wedding receptions from the old days. After a major refurbishment and the establishment of an award winning garden the Coffee House very quickly became once again THE wedding venue for Toowoomba people.
Unfortunately the building was very old and became increasingly expensive to maintain so after 8 years running the Coffee House, Theresa decided to rebuild it into apartments, and rename it with its original name: “Laguna”
Laguna serviced apartments was finished in July and welcomed the 1st guests on the 28th July 2014, The onsite café/coffee shop retained the name “Coffee House” and welcomes old customers as well as new but in a completely different setting.

family accommodation Toowoomba
Book your family accommodation at Apartments Toowoomba now as the “Opera Australia's The MAGIC FLUTE” is come to Toowoomba on the 16th July!!! Hurry, don’t miss out! Our two bed room Apartments with full kitchen is the perfect place for your family.
Playing at the Empire theatre this is a ripping yarn for all the family.
The Magic Flute is a quest for wisdom and true love. Taking inspiration from the movies, director Michael Gow and designer Robert Kemp have set their new touring production of Mozart’s final work for the stage as a rollicking adventure in 1930s Egypt. There will be mummies, hieroglyphic puzzles and a good few laughs along the way, but is it opera? Mozart didn’t care, and nor should you. He was far more concerned with firing his audience’s imagination through the power of music.
Which is why you’ll find something for everyone in there, from The Queen of the Night’s demented showstoppers, to achingly beautiful arias, to simple ballads that wrap you up in warmth and charm.
Prepare to be enchanted, when this new, fully-staged production of The Magic Flute comes to the Empire Theatre, complete with fabulous 1930s costumes, a chamber orchestra and a vibrant cast of singers.

What is different between Hotel Accommodation and Serviced Apartments
What is different between Hotel Accommodation and Serviced Apartments
Serviced Apartment are fully furnished apartments available for both short-term as well as long-term stays, providing all the hotel-like amenities. Serviced apartments typically include soft-furnishings and cooking utensils so that long term tenants need not bring their own, and have all the services like housekeeping, front office, parking & others included in the rent. Serviced apartments therefore include all of the convenience of hotel rooms but can be less expensive than equivalent hotel rooms for longer stays. Because of the beginning of the boom in longer stay international travelers well as the corresponding increase in the level of sophistication of international travellers, interest in serviced apartments has risen at the expense of the use of hotels for short stays. Benefits may include more space and privacy, convenience when travelling with a family and the savings associated with cooking one's own meals in the apartment. The Global Serviced Apartment Industry Reports (GSAIR) by The Apartment Service Sector shows the operators and their brands, numbers they operate and other information in this varied sector. The term 'Serviced Apartment' is an umbrella term covering all the brands models, some with high levels of service and others with a no frills approach creating savings for guests and operators alike.
The difference between more ‘traditional’ accommodation, such as hotels and motels, is that serviced apartments provide more of a ‘home away from home’ feeling. The guest is provided with a self-contained apartment-style environment to stay in where serviced-apartment facilities replace restaurant, bar and laundry services and the guest has the space to live in a comfortable personal space.
There are some desirable similarities with hotel or motel equivalents though: serviced apartments also have the added benefit of the hotel-like environment that’s often enjoyed by guests - and various perks and discounts are often available for stays of 30 days or more. Serviced apartments are usually fully-furnished while offering greater privacy. And some services like valet laundry are usually available too.
A wide range of accommodation options are available within complexes, from studio apartments to one-bedroom and two-bedroom units.

Toowoomba opportunities
Property Market
The Toowoomba property market in 2014 has remained quite strong, with the average home selling for $343,000 compared to the state average of $422,000. Units are also extremely comparable to the Queensland average, with the median price for Toowoomba at $274,000 compared to Queensland’s $358,000*. Outside of metropolitan Brisbane, Toowoomba is currently the fastest selling region in regards to average days of homes or rental properties on the market. The city is also leading the way with the percentage of profit making sales over the past year. According to statistics from RP Data, 95% of houses and 92% of units and townhouses sold for a profit over the 12 months to February 2014, with both these results the highest for the state. With massive imminent job creation and some of the nation’s most significant infrastructure upgrades, the city is set to be an undeniable economic growth zone for decades to come. It comes as no surprise that the Toowoomba property market is about to have a strong 12 to 24 months, with increasing sales volumes, growing employment and tighter vacancy rates. This means now is a great time to buy an investment property in the city.
*Figures for 12 months to April 2014, based on sales reported to Australian Property monitors.
Convention Centre
Toowoomba has missed out on opportunities for large scale conferences, sporting and cultural events, as a direct result of not having a useable facility. As such, TSBE believes there is significant opportunity for a property developer to build and operate a hotel in the city which would include a significant conference centre facility. Along with the major projects set out for Toowoomba, the city has also seen strong business tourist growth. These factors are expected to increase the attractiveness of Toowoomba as both a business event destination and also as a location for a purpose-built convention centre. For a city of the size and population of Toowoomba, its contribution to Queensland’s business events market is low. Toowoomba has many attributes that make it an attractive business events destination, but limited and inflexible venue capacity compared to other destinations represents a major drawback.

Dr SubASH Amin's SHORT TERM STAY IN TOOWOOMBA
Last Friday one of our guests at Laguna Serviced Apartments, a doctor Subhash Amin and his lovely wife came for dinner at Theresa’s house as he was leaving to go back to his home in Sydney after a six week stay at Laguna Apartments He came to Toowoomba as a volunteer doctor during the holiday period to help over the busy festive season when a lot of staff are on annual leave. He is a psychiatrist and specialises in mental health.
A truly gentle and compassionate man, originally from India, he has lived in Australia for over 40 years. During his stay at Theresa’s apartments he endeared himself to Theresa and staff alike with his cheerful and compassionate disposition. During his first few days in Toowoomba he mentioned that he felt like leaving as he missed his family and friends and his first grandchild of only two weeks. Very soon after that and many talks and discussions later he settled right in and felt he had made good friends with Theresa and the staff of Laguna Apartments. He made ginger and mint tea every day for Theresa and would tell her of his days activities and talk anonymously of the patients he had helped during the day.
During the last week of his stay he was joined by his lovely wife and he took what time he had to show her around his newly adopted home town of Toowoomba. When they left for Sydney it was like saying goodbye to old friends but with the invitation of always a place to stay when in Sydney it wasn’t a hard sort of parting. The hospitality industry has all sorts of hidden rewards!
